Our Work

Historic Scotland Listings Team

Listing recognises a building’s special architectural and historic interest and secures its protection through the planning system.

Historic buildings cover diverse aspects of life, from education to recreation, to defence, industry, homes and worship. Much of Scotland’s social and economic past and its present are expressed in these exceptional buildings. Listing recognises their special character and  historic importance. This in turn helps to ensure that their potential for the study of history and for wider issues such as sustainability, community identity, place-making, and social and economic regeneration are all fully explored.

The Listing Team identifies buildings and structures of special architectural or historic interest under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997.

Team work includes development of policy (in liaison with Historic Scotland’s Policy Group) and best practice, undertaking survey programmes and a wide range of education, training and promotion activities.
